Quote | Significant cost reductions have been made by employing COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) hardware instead of the slower cycle of designing and testing custom hardware. |
It will be operated by WindowsCE, RogerWilco, and Intel Home PC Cameras. Private: "Come in echo lea--- damn, it crashed again. I should've upgraded to XP." Corporal: "No man, install linux, are you stupid?"
Just my lame attempt to crack a joke.
Hey I'm still reading this thing:
Quote | Geeks will be disappointed to learn that the computer runs a custom version of Windows 2000 on a Pentium III clocked at 500 MHz. An 800 MB flash memory drive means one less component involving moving parts (see The Register). The radio subsystem runs on WinCE. In theory, costs could be further reduced by turning to open source alternatives such as embedded Linux. If nothing else, it would put to rest any morbid "blue screen of death" jokes. |
Well they've got my number.

Land warrior is a joke. all of the soldiers I've talked to (I live next to McChord AFB and Ft. Lewis...) hate the idea of LW. "who gives a rip if you can see around corners. if that pack dies, I don't want a 19 year old, fresh out of boot to not know what to do without having a computer tell him."
1: The battery life is laughable. 2: If you sit down too hard wearing one, it'll lock up. 3: It's heavy. 5 lbs at least. that's 5 lbs that I'd use for ammo or smoke grenades. 4: Easily jammed. 5: A packet kiddy in libya or wherever can DoS one. 6: Do you _really_ want soldiers browsing n0rp during a mission? dropping trou on the battle field and having a little "executive relief" is generally considered bad form...
<edit> 7: And what happens if the enemy gets ahold of one. hook it up to a libyan machine, and have the position of every LW equipped american in a 30km radius. smart.
