Just wanted to post this awful story.

Well, we had our AP Calc exam this morning, and one of my good friends didn't show up, so we called him on a cell phone from the classroom.  He was at the hospital, because his dad was racing the Porsche and had a seizure.  That's all I knew.  I got home at 2:10 today and gave him a call to find out more.  I didn't get a hold of him until 3:30ish, and heres what I found out.  The crash certainly wasn't the worst part.

He was racing his Porsche 911 at Road America, and wanted my friend (his son) to time him on a lap.  So he started the lap...and didn't come back around.  My friend waited until another car behind him came around two more times, and then he walked around the track to the site of his dad's car pretty banged up, and two ambulances.  Flight for life landed minutes later.  People said he had just slumped over the wheel, but he had felt it coming, as he had slowed down to 10 MPH or so.
My friend took his car and met his dad at the hospital.  He seemed fine, and described what happened.  He felt some sharp pain in his right side, like really bad gas, but decided to keep going.  Seconds later, he started sweating and couldn't feel his fingers.  He pulled into the pits, and then passed out.  After the story was done, and my friend's mom had arrived, tests came back.  My friend had to leave the room: it obviously wasn't good.  He came back in, and was told quite bluntly his dad has cancer of the liver.  The tumors are enormous, and he's got months to live.  I think his dad is 52.  Anyways, his dad manages the hospitals, and talked to a guy higher up.  He says there's about a 10% chance that it's NOT cancer.  If you've ever seen those red dots, really bright red, that some guys get on their skin, you can also get those on your liver.  If one broke open and bled, it would look exactly like it does on the x-rays.  Well, they're going in and checking tomorrow, so here's for hoping.  Say a few prayers.

I'll be praying for them.  My grandfather fought cancer for about 8 years when he only had about 5 months to live, so there is hope.

Tell him good luck.

My uncle also just recently found out about his cancer. I can't remember which type it is, but he had to have some removed from his face... They say he's got a couple months left, it sorta bites the big one... ???

Speaking of horrible things, my tiny grandmother slipped on her kitchen floor two days ago and broke both her wrists, two rips, her right hip, bruised her liver, and broke her nose. Lovely isn’t it.

Ugh.  Skipped school today and just relaxed with my bud.  I feel like shit, it's actually hard not to cry, even though it's not even my fuckin dad.  They're almost certain it's cancer now, actual results coming back Fri-Sat.  He's got six months to live, tops, they said.  My friend's not gonna be able to go to school (Iowa State) because he obviously wants to stay close to home now.  He's going to have to assume almost a fatherly role to his little brother, who's in sixth grade.  The thing is, he's not even worried about himself, he's worried about his mom, since "he's her life."  I can't believe he's handling it so well, but all I can do is give him credit for it.  I'm gonna go to the hospital tonight to see him.  Later.

In the last year I've watched two good people die of cancer.  The first was a Christian volunteer worker, the second a high school art teacher.

It's absolutely the hardest thing to watch them deal with the future, and have no power whatsoever to change anything for them.

For me, even today, I would give several years of my own life to give them more time.

My best friend has yet to even talk about his mom dying.  All I can do is watch out for him when it starts to get the best of him.

That's pretty much all anyone can do - simply be there.

That bites, Beastie.

Maybe we all lose track of the fact that we can die at any moment...

I hope he can go back to the tracks and the cars he enjoys... is that possible?

YES!  COMPLICATED SURGERY CAN BE PERFORMED!
I was there when the test results came back yesterday.  It's "only" a huge aneurysm (spelling?).  Of the two arteries that lead in, one of his has been completely blocked since birth, probably, putting extra strain on the other one.  It had probably been bleeding for a day or two before he passed out.  He's under the knife tomorrow or Tuesday, and it's gonna be complicated, but that beats sure death.  They actually got a written apology from the doctor who told them he was certain it was cancer.  He caused a LITTLE stress.
