People who do this really need to grow up. If someone is depressed and they are told to "do the world a favor and commit suicide", it really doesn't help at all. And I really feel sorry for people that think it's funny, cause it's really not.

I doubt most people who say it think it's funny, or even mean it. However, you do have a point: it's not something to say to someone who's feeling depressed, and probably should never be said at all.

I think we all need to resolve to think more about what we say before we blurt it out: as me mum used to always say, "a little oil of courtesy makes everything run a bit smoother."

Sorry for making that comment, Evil_Monkey, I know it's no excuse, but I didn't realize you were feeling depressed, and I chose an inopportune time to vent frustration. I shall try to be more civil in the future, as you suggested.

isnt it a bit selfish to commit suicide in the first place? its not like theyre the only one it affects, theres all their friends and relatives, who obviously dont mean much if theyd rather take the easy way out of whatever their problem is. suicide is among the more selfish things people do...

having had a friend who did commit suicide, i'm faced with an attitude about it that shocked me, and causes most people to think that i'm an insensitive asshole.

i'd NEVER suggest to someone that they kill themselves... but over the time since he died (it'll be four years in december) i've started to think that preventing a friend who really truly wants to die would be a cruelty. if life is torture, and a friend wants out, i'll tell them i hope they don't, and that i love them and would miss them..... but i can't imagine myself forcing them to stick around. i kind of think it'd be selfish of me to try to force them to live a life they find nothing but misery in just because i'd miss them when they're gone.

granted, i don't ever want any of my friends to kill themselves... but i no longer have it in my heart to inflict the misery onto someone of making them live a life that's not worth it to them. i'll probably get a lot of negative response for that.. but before you start flaming, remember this: i would TRY to talk them out of it, i would TRY to tell them that life is worth it, and i would never, ever give up trying. in the end though, if they're my friend and i really love 'em, i have to respect their decision.

ok. sorry to babble and dump that all out here. i just needed to say it.

It depends on how old the friend is, I had a friend try to commit suicide over a girl and he was 18 at the time. I don't care how fucked your life is, if you're not even 20 yet and want to commit suicide i will drag you kicking and screaming away from the idea, there's just too much to life to die so young.

And that is why you SHOULD help suicidal people... They WILL regret it, that is almost 100\% certain, yet without help they won't get the chance to get past whatever problem is causing them to want to die.

Letting anyone you care about kill themself is absolutely unconscienable... Believe me, even if they say it's what they want, they will eventually be thankful for being saved.

This is one of those cases where a few of you might want to bite your tongues in the future.
My uncle decided to throw himself off a motorway bridge with a rope round his neck one new year's eve. My dad had a depressive period where he even considered taking a few too many pills. It seems a manic depressive streak runs in the family. My grandpa (dad's side) tried shooting his wife in a marketplace and then turned the .22 on his head. Too small a calibre to kill either of them, but it's proof of the fact that it's inherent and genetic.
Sometimes you can't fight this kind of depression. At least now I know what it might be should I get that way when I'm older.

Summary: It's NOT fucking nice to say this to the depressed party, even if you feel you've done what you can and feel drained by trying to help them and tell them they're great. You can't fight a chemical imbalance. A few supplements sorted my dad out. That's all he needed.
Learn to be more tolerant people. It's easy to be nasty when you're an ignorant bastard but you'll soon wise up when it happens to someone close.
