i personally dont like linux. it takes too much work for me to learn, and although, windows generally blows, its getting better, and its still really easy to use. those of you who have a problem with me not being a linux zealot can you stick your thumbs up your asses....now. however, my friend an i had a great idea, to make an OS that was as easy(if not easier) to set up as windows, was as easy to use, had easily scalable help(my friend wants an AI that will know exactly what you want to run without you needing to use the start menu or whatever). basically, the goal would be something as stable as linux, but as easy to use (if not easier) as windows. i bet we will probably start it, but never finish, due to the factor of being fuck ass lazy.------------------ quote: Originally posted by Dark Knight Bob: does anyone not notcie that sithee isnt actually talking out of his ass like a lot of people here

I think a lot of those ZDNet people take "zealot" to mean "anyone who likes it". For example, I love Linux. If you're having a OS problem, I'm probably gonna tell you to run Linux. But, I also know Linux is a bitch a lot of the time. Shit, I'm still attempting to get the damned USB shit working right, and I started that little project a month ago.and for Sithiee... the AI idea wouldn't work to well, you'd either have to engineer a totally new concept of AI development, or just do like voice stuff and have it "learn" what you want to do. I had a similar idea. I figure just take all the major OS's (Win 9x, WinNT (2k), Linux, BSD's, MacOS, whatever else) and compare the small parts, figure out which has the best, then jack it and put 'em all in one new OS. UI of Mac (I dunno any OS that my grandma can say "well that's pretty" to other then Mac, sorry), "User Friendly"ness of Windows, and pick parts out of all the kernels for stability, speed, whatever. I think it would make a killer OS to have the gaming power of my windows box, with the stability and server-nature of my linux box, and something my dad can sit down and use if he has to. ------------------ Net Syndrome - http://www.netsyndrome.net/ Spydir Web - http://www.netsyndrome.net/spydirweb/

yeah, i dont know how he was thinking of implementing it, but it did sound neat. anyway, the thing about linux is that yes its stable, but anyone with intelligence will recognize that its more often a shitload easier to get stuff to run with windows than with linux. thats why i like it, i get frustrated really easily when things dont work the way theyre supposed to, windows, of late anyway, runs really well (i dont remember the last time my machine crashed, and it never gets a rest, and stays on days at a time), and its easy. when i install something new, its up and running 5-10 minutes later. even hardware. i completely replaced the motherboard, processor, and a buttload of ram, and i didnt have to do anything to get it to work(asides from hitting the on button). its easy to use, and until linux is this easy, it will never become a common desktop os. i think the problem right now is that the way windows is designed, is that its written in such a way that the reason it is so easy to use is why its so unstable(for other people i guess). i dont know for sure.and yea, if we ever actually start to do that OS, and you get some mad programming skills, your probably welcome to join the team. the problem is right now, i think, that everyone caters to their own market. people who write for linux write stuff that makes sense to linux users. windows is made to make sense to other windows users. most mac users seem to be only able to use their macs. the companies seem to keep driving it this way. if there was an OS that was easy for all to use, without losing the functionality of any, we would have a monopoly . back on topic, ive come to the conclusion that anyone who writes/works for a technology reporting magazine or website for a living doesnt know jack about what they talk about. PC Magazine spews crap. zdnet spews crap. all of them spew crap. and i hate it, because my dad is always excited about this new thing he learned on zdnet, and i tell him, no thats not true, and i give him reasons, and he doesnt believe me, and for backup, he says, oh, ill show you the article. i say, it was written by zdnet, thats like taking a nazi's word that the boat carrying jews blew up by itself. he says, oh, ill show you the article. sometimes though, its a pc magazine article. i tell my dad hes hopeless. he then proceeds to buy a gateway, fill it with useless programs, and when i tell him the reason his computer runs like shit, even though it has more ram than mine is because he has 5 million programs running in the backround. he says "but they only take up like 12kb each!" "YOU HAVE 5 MILLION RUNNING!" "i dont get it, they dont use up much space". then theres our nice cable router. "dad, buy this one, its more expensive, but it works better, it has more functionality, and the customer and professional reviews rate it higher than the cheap one." "oh, we'll buy this one, and save money, and you can fix it!" "am i getting the money we are saving so that ill fix it for you when it breaks?" "no, youll fix it because you want to use the internet" i disabled his port access to mail, and basically everything else. i tell him its a network error, but im not sure how to fix it. i tell him its a real shame we didnt buy the router that was better. my dad is an ass ------------------ quote: Originally posted by Dark Knight Bob: does anyone not notcie that sithee isnt actually talking out of his ass like a lot of people here
