Any ideas why win2k would say I have an incompatible hardware config when I try to upgrade from win98se?
I've got a Frankenstein box....pieced together over a year ago. Stores wanted too much $$$.
MB: Asus p5-a (socket 7) Mem: 196Mb HD: ~8 gig left (new drive) Proc: AMD k6 450Mhz
No other funky attachments...soundblaster...nvidea ...thats it.
I allowed it to attempt the change to NTFS...it does the reporting and lists the items that may not work...
The next click tells me my configuration is incompatible.
Ideas?

I had Win2k for about 10 hours last week; I lost all sorts of drivers and utilities! It was stable, though; why not. Nothing worked, so no problemo.
Let's wait a tad for the real boys to weigh in.

try one of these two
- take everything out, try turning on the machine. then turn it off and put everything back in.
- format before installing.

DO NOT do an upgrade -- liquid metal said it when he told you to reformat first. There's just too much baggage left over from an upgrade.

I think I'll abandon the Win2k OS for the time being. Don't wanna destroy everything w/ a reformat...I'll wait until graduation to jump on that grenade.
Besides...Win98se is working fine.
Thanks

30 gigs of backup isn't exactly appealing... however I suspect I'll have more time in the coming weeks to make the conversion.

30 gigs of backup would be time consuming, and depending on the backup method, expensive(?).
30 gigs of new HD should cost you about 40-60 bucks.
burn large files (like videos) to cd/cdrw. move everything else to a second drive. format first drive. install. =)

That and if your going to start from square one with your system try running xp.
Its like 2000 with a lot of the bugs removed.
Just make sure you have drivers for everything first.
