Well its that time again.
This time I plan on attempting to assemble the thing myself, but want a few suggestions first.
Mainly: What type of motherboard to get, and what controller. To go with an XP 1600 - 2000.
Yeah.. hell, even suggest an entire system, as long as the price is reasonable, I'm open.

I just got an Asus A7V333 motherboard, and it's been treatin me right. It's loaded with features, including a smart card reader, custom boot logo, overheating protection, usb 2.0, and all kinds of other shit. Mine's also got RAID, too. I got that motherboard, plus the athlon xp 1800 for about 300 at a computer show. It's also a great motherboard for overclocking, but I haven't done any of that yet because my fan barely keeps the cpu cool and still sounds like a friggin jet engine.

Well at the technical school I attend, they build machines for people all the time. We use the ECS K7S5A with the XP Processors and DDR Ram. They have a ton of opitions onboard sound and lan to name a few. And we havn't had any go bad yet. So I must say they are nice boards. And we order most our parts from www.micropro.com its a nice site and the prices are most the time decent.

"dood, your getting a dell"
I get nothing but dells at work. the oldest ones are now 3 years old and we have had only a few problems. Mostly with people designing control boards that short out.
Dell still replaced the motherboards. "Hey, we told you we would cover it if there was a problem."
Good stuff for being mass produced.
If you have the cash to put out look at the bigger workstations. (610s and such) They kick ass with 1gig of memory and dual gig chips.

Dell is definately one of the leading pre-manufactered computer companies out there. If only they'd support AMD chips as well, I'd have no beef with them. Well, other than that damn "Dooood! You're getting a Dell!" guy.
Building your own system is so much more fun though. The only problem is having no one to blame but yourself if it's screwed up.

ECS are pretty low end in all aspects and they are the cheapest i am getting A7V333 with PC2700 ram. of all companies i really trust asus, they live up to their brand name status. a slightly higher price is a small sacrafice for a better motherboard as far as i am concerned

Once again, I agree, but if your on a tight budget, I havn't had a problem out of the ECS board yet. My favorite boards are A-Bit by far, but for most people they don't understand paying more for a motherboard. I am not saying you don't understand this, I am saying that if your in a budget situation, I see nothing wrong with the ECS, I have proablly put together a total of 40 systems in the past year with ecs boards and havn't had a complaint one.

Totally legacy free and has got shit loads of on board stuff.
Pricey but you always want th emotherboard to be good or its pointless getting components to run at their best.
