Actually I wish Microsoft would steal some personal information from me, the money I got from the lawsuit would sure come in handy.
A lot of the automatic file updating and passive scans of file versions help keep your system more secure for those people oblivious to the use of the service pack. MS is kind of damned if they do and damned if they don't on this one. Everyone wants their files to be the latest and greatest, so MS has to have a way of checking the versions. So why does the search connect to the internet? Well, when you're installing new hardware and you are searching for the most up to date driver XP will check the MS digitaly signed driver base on their servers to ensure you get the most up to date and tested driver. When you search for a file that may not be a driver the search will check the file database just to be on the safe side. Personally if I can't find a system file I'd rather the system checked with MS to see if they had instead of returning a "no file found". How is this intrusive?
