Yarrrr!  Avast and shiver me timbers!  *ahem*  As I was saying, I'm looking to go with another new setup, and to truly do it right this time.  Right now, I'm looking at a Lian Li PC-61 case, ABIT KR7-Raid, probably an AMD XP1900+, and a GeForce3 Ti 200 or 500.  The questions I have are these:
1) Anyone know if the price difference ($150) between the two GeForces is worth the gain in power?
2) Any good heatsink recommendations?
3) I have an SB Live, any newer card worth looking into?  I've heard Hercules has a nice one.
Any and all advice is appreciated.  It'll be a mostly gaming rig, running a dualboot of 98SE and XP, in a removeable bay, with a 2nd drive of FreeBSD.

Depends on your budget.

The Ti 500 offers a lot more performance than anything else on the market, and will have a longer lifespan.  If you can afford it, this would be a valuable asset to any gaming rig.

For cooling, get a Thermalright SK6.  It's ugly.  It's noisy.  It's 7000 RPM's of pure heat dissipating lovin'.  If you want something quieter, you're going to sacrifice cooling, but at least you'll be able to sleep at night.  In that case, I'd go with a SVC Golden Gate 30CFM.  Maybe even something out of the Alpha line if you want to spend a bit more.

As for the sound card, that's your call.  Personally, I've never been able to justify spending a ton of money on a more expensive sound card that I can barely tell apart from the others.  A SoundBlaster Live shouldn't let you down in the sound department.  If you want one of the best, and the bragging rights that come along with it, get something from the SB Audigy line.  They have some nifty features, but they will also put a dent in your wallet.

On a side note, be sure you read up on that Abit board.  There have been quite a few problems cropping up in them with various hardware configurations.  You might consider looking into the EPoX 8KHA+.  It offers identical performance, and has a lot of features that the Abit board doesn't offer.

One final thing, remember that the Athlons are due for their die shrink and core change in the next month or two.  It might be smart to hold off on such a major purchase until after it occurs.

I have heard the exact same thing from to many people to ever buy an ABIT. You can never go wrong with an Asus. Plus, on board raid can be a real disadvantage as well, not as much support as promise would give you. Even better than promise is ArcoIDE Duplidisk; faster than hell, and compleatly OS independant, the bios just see's it as one hard drive. which is a real benefactor with dual booting and BSD, even though they just added the raid support to it.

Asus; another good alternative.

Asus, EPoX, and Iwill are some of the leading brands on the market right now.  Another potential high performance gaming motherboard to keep your eye on would be the NVIDA board that is set for release.  In it's current state, there are better solutions than the Abit KR7.  Be sure to take a look at them, and then make an informed decission.

Many thanks for all the advice floating around.  My reason for having gone Abit was the fact I've gone through 2 of their mobos and had no problems at all.  I don't use the raid, so I don't care TOO much there.  But I'll definitely rethink that motherboard, and wait a bit to see where the chips go.
