i got a new longer cable but it still doesn't reach. i don't see any way to plug my hard drive and a cd drive on the same channel. i can't move the hard drive up or the cd drive down a slot because there are theres capacitor thingies on the motherboard that stick out and block the space. right now i have my hard drive on primary master and cdr and dvd on secondard master and slave respectably. everything is running in a udma mode, but my dvd movies still stutter! it happens when changing scenes. when it happens, it seems that my dvd drive has to spin up to a faster speed after running at a low speed before. while spinning up faster is when it stutters.

Next time if you want help, speak English... I'm crap at other languages.

IDE devices run at the speed of the slowest device IIRC, so CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs will slow down the channel at UDMA33.  Keep them on the same channel - if you put a DVD drive and a modern HDD on the same IDE channel, everything will run slower.

Stuttering DVD playback is caused by either/or:

  • Scratched, shitty DVD media
  • Pantsy CPU
  • Shoddy GFX card
  • Shoddy system overall

Moving your hard drive onto the DVD's channel will do fuck all good.

Cheers.

wtf was that for?

anyway, yes, if you put an ancient HD on a channel with a fast one, you'll notice a slowdown.  Put 2 Ultra66 devices on a channel and it still runs at Ultra66.  Only noticable slowdown is when you're swapping data between the two devices.  HD + burner on the same channel means that my system has less CPU time when burning CD's than if my burner was on a different channel.  When I burn a CD, though, I don't use my system, so all I care about is that it burns reliably at full speed.

Hodrodding your system with extra controller cards is cool and all, but Promise cards aren't real reliable, and Adaptec's shit ain't cheap :p
