i am considering trying freebsd, but i am not sure if it's worth it

There are some people who swear by it. In my experience, though, it has no more functionality than Linux, but it has less support (especially drivers), and it's a bitch to install. In addition, FreeBSD gods are assholes unless you are a FreeBSD guru yourself. Linux gods are generally nice to n00bies unless you're running Red Hat

I got a couple friends that moved to fbsd cuz they heard it was linux, but better (bull). FreeBSD is a simple BSD with way to much baggage, and quite a few security problems (go around packet storm for a while, you'll see). BSD's are generally a little harder to install and have slightly worse support then linux because they're not as popular, but they're really great systems. I'd say stick with mandrake for a while, learn your way around, and maybe move on to a more... "advanced", to say, linux such as slackware or debian. If damien here's still the cool linux guy I remember, he's another slackware dude to help out

mdk is generally icky imho, I use FBSD on my gateway, but I've only been running it with ipnat/ipf for a few days now. I like it a lot but I havn't had time to mess with it. I'd reccomend it over linux, but if you do decide to go with linux pick slack (my distro of choice) or debian... It really depends on what you need to use it for.. OpenBSD is supposed to be the best for a router but since you are considering using mdk, I am betting this is not for a router/gateway. mdk does have pretty good hardware support (if this is an issue) FBSD is supposed to be the best of the BSD's for desktop usage, but I find myself going to fbsd guru's quite a bit in search for answers  I don't think I ended up doing it that much with slack, I just had quite a few mb's of reading material (read linuxdoc)

yay slackware! It's the cleanest Linux distro I've seen so far. It doesn't load your system up with a bunch of crap that's supposed to make Unix "easy to use." Slackware assumes you either a. know Unix, or b. want to learn Unix. It's not a brain-dead distro like Red Hat.
