Dammit!
Every time I boot to win98 i get this stupid "Windows has found an error in your registry and will restore a recent backup." type thing. The only way I can get it to boot is to stick in the boot disk, run scanreg /fix from the prompt, and reboot. But the next time I reboot it happens all over again!
This problem has happened before and the only way I can get rid of it completely is by formatting, and it eventually comes back. I've seen on a site somewhere that this problem is caused by bad RAM, but I've already replaced my RAM since the first time this happened, and I've even tried other people's RAM.
Linux is working fine for now, but I'm gonna need to get wndows back again sooner or later. Any ideas?

It's nothing to do with your RAM, that's a bunch of ass.  Use regedit from the command line to restore your registry from a week before your problems started, problem solved.

If incubus' solution doesn't work, you can reinstall *without* reformatting.  The steps below will force Windows install to reinstall Windows 98 clean without losing the rest of your beloved data :

1. Boot to a DOS prompt from your HD : hold down F8 while booting, pick "Command prompt only" at the menu.

2. type:
attrib -r -s -h *.*
This unhides all hidden and system files in the root.

3. type:
del system.1st
This throws out one of the 3 files that make up the registry.

4. type:
move windows oldwin
This allows your new Windows install to go into C:\WINDOWS instead of C:\WINDOWS.000

5. type:
cd oldwin

6. type:
del win.com
This keeps Windows Setup from detecting your old windows installation.  C:\OLDWIN is just a plain ol' DOS directory now :)

7. Reboot from Windows 98 CD and reinstall Windows.  When you're done, you'll find your old desktop in C:\Oldwin\Desktop; move this stuff over and then throw out the C:\oldwin folder.
