I've got a compaq persario 1200xl304 and just yesterday I decided that it should have win2000, so I went on and installed it fresh.. getting rid of any trace of winME. Ofcourse I expected some problems to arrise but I was able to sort most of them out.. but the Onboard soundcard (Soundblaster) will just not install. I've sorted through compaq.com and creative.com for hours and still no answers .. I have no driver with the comp.. and so far nothing online has worked even slightly. Anyone ever go through something similar or have some insight?

edit: oh yeah.. it's a laptop.

I've got the perfect solution:

GET RID OF THAT CRAP!!!!

That's about your only way to solve your problems. Get rid of it and buy a Dell.

That’s the beauty of comaq; you never have to upgrade. Or was it you CAN never upgrade...I forget which it is...

most of the time, there's a way you can work around the drivers that came with the system IE you make the cd's think your win2k is actually a compaq.

the drivers are there on the cds...you just have to look for them.

I think I'm going to be forced to downgrade this compaq back to winME... since the soundcard still worked there.. and there is a "WinME recovery" CD in the package... (which btw uses some sort of compression I can't figure out.. so I can't get my sound driver from in there.. <sigh> ) Maybe I should install winMe.. get sound going.. then find the drivers holding it up.. then transfer them onto win2k.. hmmm.... ! nah.. probably wouldn't work.

My sympathy. My aunt sent me a ancient piece of Compaq crap. (Thank you so much! I think I will go start a bonfire!) It is hilarious. It doesn't have Win98 or even 95. Get this... It's Win 3.1! It's useless! I can only play Mah-Jong! I think I will take the Motherboard out and put it on my wall as a decoration. Uhhh.

I now have 3 useless computers... 1 very usefull but I don't even own it...
