I'm looking for an external CDRW that would hook up to a fairly old IBM laptop. Since it doesn't have USB probably something that hooks up through com port. I am not looking for something overly expensive either. Something that can write in the rage of 4X to 12X would be more then enough. Any sudgestions are appreciated.
Thanks

I think you might mean parallel port, as the com ports max speed is ~115KB/s, which isn't even 1X.

Here you go. 2x2x6 external HP CDRW on parallel port.

Oh yes - and the 115200bps of a serial port isn't 115200/1024 = 112.5KB/sec - it's 115200/(8*1024) = 14.4KB/sec. And people wonder why serial-port digital cameras take so fucking long, and why modems blow more rod than a Yugo.

Though your other alternative is one that interfaces through a PCMCIA slot (assuming it has one). I think that will give you better performance than through the parallel port.

But with the crappy ones, it's important to find out if it's 16-bit "PC Card" or 32-bit CardBus.
