Oops..
Okay, I downloaded the ISO of Windows XP RC2 and I wanted a seperate partition for it. I am running Windows ME originally. So, I get Partition Magic 6.0 and make a seperate fat32 partition for xp. I name it WINXP. However, it says what os are you going to be installing on this partition, I select Windows 2000 because it is the closest to XP. So, when it is done partitioning, I reboot the computer, and it says
"Operating system missing."
Umm.. how do I select that I want to boot of the Windows ME partition so that I can install xp on the WINXP partition? I cant get the computer to boot. Help?
Thanks.

i feel like being nice today. my suggestion would be to get a partition utility that can run in win32 dos mode. get a 98 or me boot disk and verify that you still have your me partition, then set that partition to active. it should boot into me then.

I have Windows ME on C: and I put RC2 on D:, let it convert it to NTFS and it comes up with the dual boot fine. Try the boot disk thing, what drive did you install RC2 on? It might have messed up putting those 4?boot files on there(boot.ini, etc...)

the C: (winme) partition is set to active. It is the only one that is active. I have a me boot disk, and the partitions are both still there. I never accually installed RC2 onto the xp partition, because I didnt get that far. The xp partition is hidden. Any other ideas? thanks

Ok.. first of all did you make your partition magic rescue disks? heh.. no? uh oh... there is a reason why this step is offered... well if you did make them.. they are bootable, and have a partition manager and you can set the active partition to win98 so it doesn't even screw around with the XP one until you need it to. I've done this a lot but can't really remember the specifics.. but it's not to difficult. Now, for a winXP rc2 burning story.. I used Easy cd creator 5 to burn winXP and when it was almost done (finished burning the first track) it stopped. I mean, it didn't move.. the timer stayed at 1:30 seconds left to go and the kilobytes to go were left at 0.0kb. It seemed that I was screwed once again.. (this is the 3rd time burning XP for me) since it didn't seem like it wanted to finalize. But, being the hopefull person I am.. I restarted and tried to burn again, hoping easycd hadn't burned anything at all on that cd.. since it was my last. Loe and behold easy cd creator detected a track.. and finalized the CD! I was so releaved.. that I wasn't going have to wait till tommorrow to try again. Now.. the fun part installing it and going through problems like above.

Here is an excellent article on multibooting a 9x/2K/Linux system - a lot of this stuff applies to XP.

Your best bet there is to try to get booted off an ME bootdisk or else find someone else's computer and create some PM6 rescue disks from there. Partitioning is not something that should be played around with - that's like seeing how your body would function if your jugular were moved to your left foot.

Maybe because the XP partition is NTFS??

If XP deteched ME when you where installing XP, then it should automatically enable the dual boot option, and present you with a menu everytime you boot up. If not, then right click on My Computer->Properties->Advanced->Startup and Recovery. You should find a pull down menu with the OS's that XP can boot. If you don't see ME in the list, good luck, because I don't know how to help you then.
