hmm, works for me. you could try www.geforcefaq.com but it seems they removed the entry I was pointing you toward, anyway.here's how I fixed it. I'm sure this is the long and lame way, but it works for me.
(I'm going to continue assuming you're running win2k and a geforce, since you didn't correct me)
pull up regedt32
hkey_local machine -> SYSTEM -> CurrentControlSet -> Services -> nv4 (this may different for yours, look for anything nv (for nvidia)) -> device0
there's an assload of keys in there. look for the ones that say NVx_Modes. find the one applicable to your card (if it's a geforce, deal with all the NV10 entries; geforce2, all the NV15s)
Pull those up, and you'll see a chart showing the various resolutions and vertical refresh rates. Go through each of the applicable entries, and next to the resolutions you use, remove all the rates you don't want (moving from left to right). It'll default to the smallest one in that row. I personally removed everything but 120 for the resolutions I operate at, and it's worked for me. However, MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE to LEAVE THE ZERO at the end of each string. I dunno what happens if you remove the 0, but the old geforcefaq strenuously warned against it.
edit: fyi, I'm running an old version of the ref drivers, 5.32 or something similar. The entries may have changed in later detonater versions; if they have, I can't help ya. Every driver update seems to give me worse performance.
