Just a quick question... isn't the cable between the modem and the phone socket on the wall the same for all modems? It seems however that the cable for my external modem doesn't work on my friends internal modem. It just doesn't get the dial tone. What's up with this bad boy??

Your computer is defective. Take it back to the store immediately because it could explode at any minute.

Not really. All phone cables should be the same (except for PC Card modem dongles). I suspect you've plugged the cable into the phone pass-through jack instead of the line jack.

code:
The symbols (should be next to the jacks engraved in the back of the card):
,------. .-------.
| |!!| | (_)^^^^^(_)
|_ _| | ### |
|__| | ### |
`-----'
Line Pass-Thru
Jack Jack

Aha. Your suspicions are incorrect. The external and internal modem lack pass-through jacks. I may be wrong, but I think European modems don't have them. I think I read that somewhere, due to some stupid regulation. Anyway what's a PC Card modem dongle. It sounds dirty. I have a dirty modem.

The modem is defective?

edit - Here's a dongle:

edit 2 - Actually, the modem probably isn't defective, but might be installed incorrectly/not installed at all. Try uninstalling the drivers (if there are any), restarting, removing the modem, restarting, and reinstalling the modem. BTW, do any other phone cables work?

Oooooh so that's a dongle. I was mighty confused so I looked into it (only a little. I'm tired). Are dongles for them tiny cards you put into laptops then? I guess so.

This is frustrating, I know this internal modem-bitch works.. but the original cable was lost long ago. My friend bought a new one and it just didn't work. I remember a while back another friend got the same problem, but when he 'borrowed' (ie. stole, the cheeky monkey) another guys internal modem cable it worked. My friend was pleased, the other guy mystified why his Inter-web stopped working and I thought maybe there was two kinds of cable for internal and external. But it makes no sense. Arghh internal modems should be burned.

<edit> aha you cunning swine! You changed the picture to a big one making it obvious its for laptops. Now i look foolish. Oh well.</edit>

dongle just means a proprietary thing to be plugged into your comp, in the pcmcia modem's case a special cable. back in the day there was even game copy protections that required dongle's to be plugged into the computer to play.

i have never heard before of internal and external modem cables being different
my guess would be that u got a defectie moded, or something else. sometimes, if your modem isn't set up correctly and it can't detect it, instead of giving u a decent and comprehensible error message it just says "no dial tone". then again, might have something to do with where u r at. in some countries u need adaptors for different phone jacks, that could cause problems. and sometimes there just isn't a dialtone.

first thing to do will be try switching modems with your friend and see if it will work that way. if his modem will work on your computer, and yours won't work on his then your modem is defective.

and just to be on a safe side, check inside the jack on your modem if the two wires are nice and straight and are sticking up a bit. it might just be lacking contact in there
