c:\winnt\explorer.exe ?
I dunno, does win2k install to the existing windows directory or to c:\winnt?
if that doesn't work, dig out your win2k cd, and expand explorer.ex_ to c:\windows\explorer.exe
should fix things up (or stuff it up even more)

I have a problem. I installed win2k over my win98 OS a while ago. A little while later I began to fool around with different shells. I used a shell switching program to change around. I then decided to remove all my extra shells and go back to explorer. But when I use c:\windows\explorer.exe I get the file explorer, not the shell. Could anyone point me to the proper executable?

There is no c:\winnt directory. I'm going to try that explorer.ex_ trick now. Fingers crossed. Also , how does one format his hard drive under win2k?

Easiest way (if you're reinstalling) is to boot up the setup CD and do it during setup. There's a partitioning/formatting utility that comes up where it asks you which partition you want to install to.

If you're in 2k, right click on the drive and click format. To repartition at the same time, go to Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management->Storage->Disk Management.

Click Start|Run, type regedit.exe and press enter Then navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

There should be a REG_SZ string there, named "Shell". Double click that at type "Explorer.exe" (without quotes).
If you dont find "Shell" in there, then just right-click there, and choose New|String Value. Name it "Shell" and follow the above instructions.

wait a sec, if you don't have explorer.exe as your shell, then you probably dont have a start menu huh? well then just press Ctr+Alt+Del and choose task manager. then click File|New Task(Run...) and run regedit.exe
