I forget the specific anatomical terms for the mechanism, but basically an erection happens when blood rushes into the penis through the dilation of some capillaries 'around those parts'. The dilation is caused by some chemical being released into your bloodstream, usually controlled by your brain but can also be induced with nitrous. I think.

A sphincter is a type of muscle that resides at the end of a tube of smooth muscle. Since smooth muscle is mostly involuntary, the majority of control is through the sphincter being wired to the brain. You have many sphincters... one at the opening of the stomach in the esophagus, one at the end of the anus, etc. I believe there is one near the base of the penis, and it shares some of the same muscle control as the anal one. It's all kind of a wiring mess down there, and a plumbing disaster as well.

But, as I said, if you're experiencing penial growth, and also noticing increased blood pressure or increased oxygen intake or sweating, then you have a serious problem and should seek help. If the same thing happens when a man touches it, then you're probably back on even keel.
