One of the questions that has been troubling me in my sleep was answered today when I read this on Slashdot today!

quote:

parvati writes: "The New York Times is reporting that a UMass professor, Dr. David Schmidt, used computer modeling to figure out why shower curtains suck inward during showers. He designed an image of his mother-in-law's shower, filled it with 50,000 3D velocity/pressure sensors, and turned on the virtual water. 1.5 trillion calculations later, he found that drag on the falling water drops creates a mini-hurricance, producing a low-pressure 'eye' that attracts the shower curtain."

Wow!

A mini hurricane from the dropping water? Interesting.

No, I'm actually serious, I mean who would've thought that water drops falling down in a repeated pattern cause a sort of hurricane? Wait.. a hurricane? Don't you mean a tornado?

No, tornados don't consist of water, they consist of wind. Hurricanes on the other hand, consist of water and wind. They are low pressure systems. Dont spank me if I'm wrong

"mini-hurricane" is missleading. What they mean is, the same effects that cause a hurricane are happening in the shower, just on a much smaller scale. If you don't know jack diddly about low/high pressure systems and whatnot, either take high school earth science again or watch the weather channel, because I don't care to explain it right now...

Bernoulli's Principle (spelling)

As the velocity of a fluid increases, the pressure decreases. If you push water through a pipe, have a choke on the pipe (narrow section), then open it again, you'll find different pressures at all 3 regions (before, during, after... i don't remember which is which right now... i haven't had coffee).

This is the same principle that allows flight. The air (a fluid) moving over the wing moves faster to cover a longer distance, so it's pressure is lower. That sucks the plane up like there's vaccum cleaners above the wings.

In the shower, the water falling down (with the vortexes in the air created by the drops) creates a low pressure region, because the air outside the curtain is not moving. This sucks the curtain in like an aircraft wing.

Hope this helps... all from memory That engineering degree was good for something!

Does it matter if the water is hot or cold?
If it is hot then it will rise creating low pressure and the colder air on the other side of the curtain will push into the curtain attracted to the low pressure. At least that's what happens in my shower.

/me has an evil genius moment:
With a large enough shower i can create a doomsday weapon and rule the world. /me goes to ace hardware.
