well I'm about to reformat my hd again. Should I stick with win2000, or go up to winxp? if so where can I download the latest build?

hmm I'm also trying to decide whether to just delete all my mp3's and re-rip the cd's I have or not to avoid the trouble. Dunno tho...

Re-rip with Ogg Vorbis. Much improved quality over mp3, in my opinion. Even the "best" mp3 encoders squash treble in my opinion and cannot compare to the clarity of Ogg at 192kbit/s. It's like comparing JPEG and PNG.

well I use lame vbr. the file sizes average from 140-180 kbps, and I cannot tell the difference from the cd. I'll give vorbis a shot though.

For the best OS I would definately recomment XP. Since cr0 has once said that this is not a warez board, i will not be providing any URLs. Just some info on what to look for. What you need to look for is XP RTM corporate edition. Corporate edition has no activation. I would sudgest using any IRC client to connect to infatech server (irc.infatech.net:6667) and wisit channel called #bandwidth. I am sure you will be able to find some info as to where to get XP from there.
As for vorbis, it is by far the best format i have seen. With smaller size, vorbis provides quality superior to mp3. Sound is much more clear. I would definately go with vorbis for all the cd-ripping needs.

Windows 2000 all the way! I wouldn't go to XP till its been out a bit longer and had more chances to be tested in the real world.

Hehe think about that for a second dave. Actually I can't tell the difference between a cd-ripped wav, a lame 32-320 vbr 2, and a vorbis 192. However, the lame is smaller by about 15\%. Also I use my portable mp3 player occasionally and it would be a pain to convert stuff around just to use it. As for windows XP, are there good drivers for sound cards, video cards, etc out?
