I know most of you have read the "trilogy" and understand that the answer to life, the universe, and everthing is 42. (I think I may have even seen a thread like this on slashdot, but who the hell has time to wade through all that happy horseshit.) Anyway, does anyone have a *good* (i.e. non-mathematical) theory of how this started? Mine is that the sum of the dots on a pair of dice is--drumroll please--forty two, and we all know that life is just a game of chance.

42.

4 + 2 = 6

6 / (4-2) = 3

and we all know that 3 6s are either 18 or 666. You figure it out.

Even more interesting, 42/6 = 7, the perfect number. So you see it is the answer to everything, even when my taxes are due.

Actually the Number "9" shows up an inordinate amount of times in Linux..

Leads one to believe that maybe 9 being the inverse of 6 (ie 666) is in fact the holy number, and Linux the holy Operating System.

This leaves me wondering what BSD is? A fallen Angel? Why is it represented by a cute little red devil?

As for 42... pi = 3.14... next number is amazingly enough 2. 3.1(42) Coinicidence... Most likely . Loking for the meaning of life in a book that claims a towel is the most useful item in the universe, and backing that theory up with dice is a tad insane there fella. Damn...

Also I find it interesting that 42 contains two numbers that are powers of 2, yet it is not in and of itself a power of two, thereby making the point that computers are not the answer to everything, but the answers to everyting can be found through computers, and specificly the number 42, thus validating the past 8 years of my life. (8 being a power of 2)

And 42 is twice 21 which is the age at which we achieve the complete status of adulthood the world.

Towels are by far the most useful item in the universe in that without them we would have to wait till we airdry after a shower, or walk around wearing wet clothes for an hour after we shower, or never shower, all three of which are frightening prospects.

... 3.14159

... age of adulthood is really 25 -- that's when your auto insurance rates go down because you've "matured" enough.

If you want real number insanity, pick up a copy of the Illuminatus! trilogoy by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson. If you can get past the sex scene with the giant golden apple, it's a pretty good read.
