Just a few off the top of my head:

- "To kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. Received the Pulitzer Prize in the 1960's.

- "The English Patient" by Michael Ondaatje. Booker Prize in 1992.

A list of English-writing Nobel prize winners:

1907 Rudyard Kipling ("The Jungle Book", "Kim")
1913 Robindranath Tagore
1923 William Butler Yeats
1925 George Bernard Shaw
1930 Sinclair Lewis
1932 John Galsworthy
1936 Eugene Gladstone O'Neill
1938 Pearl S. Buck
1948 Thomas Stearns Eliot
1949 William Faulkner
1950 Earl (Bernard Arthur William) Russell
1953 Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill
1954 Ernest Miller Hemingway
1962 John Steinbeck
1969 Samuel Beckett
1973 Patrick White
1974 Harry Martinson
1976 Saul Bellow
1978 Isaac Bashevis Singer
1983 William Golding
1991 Nadine Gordimer
1992 Derek Walcott
1993 Toni Morrison
1995 Seamus Heany

"The Lord of the Flies" by William Golding is a good book, highly appreciated by English teachers.
