Well I haven't been using forums all that much but I have learned some of the basic rules of Etiquette. There is a question I have though about taking a forum discussion and talking about it offline.

Example:
There is a hot debate going on in the forum that myself and a few of my RL friends are posting to. Something is said online that prompts my friend to IM me and we argue in IM for a while about it.

Since the biggest advantage to forums is the community input and discussion, isn't there an implied responsibility to post our IM chat or at least the jist of it back to the forum? Also, since the arguement started online isn't polite to bring it to some sort of closure online?

If more people thought like me, the world would be a much better place. Either that or we would just kill each other, hmmm.....

Personally I would say it depends. If the other person IMed you so they could talk privately to you, then you are honor bound NOT to share what was said, not just in the forums, but IRL. But if they IMed you just to continue arguing/discussing/flaming with you IRT(In Real Time), then I would say that you should ask them if they'd mind. Remember, there are always two people in a conversation, unless you're crazy like portrman, who can carry on a conversation with just about anything

I suppose that is like if you are taping a phone call to use in evidence you have to say it clearly to the person on the other end.

In that case I would say that you would have to ask the person do they mind.

Jesus Christ, you're not gonna get sued, if your friend said something interesting then post it.

You'd only need to think about it if they'd said something that you would think you'd want to keep private like they ahd an abortion or someone in their family got molested or something.
cheers

I view posting something without permission, whether it is of a personal nature or not, as proof that a person cannot be trusted. Why would I talk to a person if I know that in the past they post everything that people say to them? It's all about trust. If you start posting conversations with friends, pretty soon no one will come to you with any interesting gossip, and then life gets boring.
