In case you don't know, these games are turn based strategy using miniatures. Warhammer is fantasy based, and 40k is sci-fi based.  If you play one of these games, what do you play?  What's your main strategy?  If you play both, which one is better in your opinion?

Me?  I play 40k, Space Marines Salamanders, a sucessor chapter I call the Azure Flames.  I liked the Salamander rules, but I painted mine blue rather than green.  I usually use lots of Terminators backed up with heavy weapons and Scout snipers.

By the way, if you are in the greater Lansing area, my club plays at 7pm on fridays in Mary Mayo residence hall.  Bring your army, we supply boards and terrain.

I've dabbled in both; prefer 40k to fantasy. I have a sizable Battlefleet Gothic armada (imperial), but it's a dead game. angry.gif

I stumbled into one of those gaming places once and was really confused.  I thought it was some kinda Civil War recreation model that they were working on   ...just with really poorly made miniatures.  It makes a bit more sense to me now  ...but not much.  Can you post a picture of what a "game" actually looks like?  If you have more soldiers do you have an advantage or is there a limit to the pieces you can put on the map?  Is there drinking between turns?  Can you have a little Salamander spy chick that seduces the other teams general and then kills him in his sleep?  That would be my stratagy.  I'm also with the Japanese on the entire Kamakazi thing ...that's some good stratigy.  It however wasn't so good when Bin Laden tried it with commercial planes on a civilian target :( bad form!  bad form!
Can Salamanders fly planes into ememy bases?

just started to build up a vampire counts army. the best way to learn is to find a couple of mates who play and watch them have a few small skirmishes to get the general idea then play your way up to larger battles. and for anyone out there it ISN'T dungeons and dragons i've played both they're totally different but both pretty damn cool.

i used to have an awesome 4400 point undead army. i also (still have i think) a 2200 point dwarf man-o-war fleet.

btw there were to RTS pc games called warhammer shadow of the horned rat, and dark omen. sothr kinda sucked but dark omen was pretty good (3d graphics + multiplayer).

OK, for those not up to speed on what 40k is, each player has an army list.  There are a lot of different armies, I'll try to list most of them.
Space Marines - Tough as nails superhuman killing machines in power armor.  Each chapter has it's own colors, and some have different rules.
Chaos Space Marines - Space Marine chapters that have fallen to the dark gods of chaos.  They get demons and other nasties, but less up to date tech than loyal chapters.
Sisters of Battle - Chicks in power armor.  They get faith points, which let them do cool cheaty things to you.
Imperial Guard - Guys with guns, and lotsa tanks.  Think WWII.
Tau - The new kids on the block, the Tau move fast, and shoot you lots.  They die in hand to hand combat.
Tyranids - Bugs from another galaxy, they have cheap throwaway troops, and huge monsters.
Eldar - Space elves with bitchin technology and more psykers than you can shake a stick at.
Dark Eldar - Evil space elves that consume souls to be immortal.  Fast like a mofo.
Orks - Da Boyz smasha lotsa stuff.  Dey also gots da waaaaaagh, what makes da boys smasha even betta!
Necrons - They sucked for a while, and still suck now.  Their real codex comes out in a few months, so then they will stop sucking.  Theyr'e all robots.
Stunties - No one plays stuntes!  They're all fucking DEAD!  There are NO MORE!

Once you choose your army, you can choose what to take to battle.  The players decide beforehand how many points to play with.  (usually 2000)  Then you must make one HQ selection, and two troops selections.  You can add on to ti after that, but you can only have 2 hq's, 6 troops, 3 elites, 3 fast attacks, and 3 heavy supports.  The Imp Guard is different, they have regiments, but that's really complicated.

Then you put your guys on the board, choose a mission, and move-shoot-assault you way to victory.

*phew*  Did I miss anything?

I used to play spacemarines as Eldar and Space Hulk. Space Hulk OWNZ! And the 2 computer games they made based on it were actually pretty bad ass too. The newer one is networkable (although I never tried it).

there are still loads of gamesworkshops over here in the uk. i don't know if they have the smae kind of secret policy where you are but all the ones here are ALWAYS hidden away down some back alley where you'd never find them unless you were deliberately looking for it. only problem is the annoying kids who always try and boast about how cool their army is when all you want to do is either buy some stuff or check out what models are coming out. Thats why most of my mates just buy online and get white dwarf to keep up to date on everything.
