It's not difficult.
I've been rather circumspect in throwing my weight around, really, when I think of all the things I could've done by now, and this time
The Word is Real;
If there is a new person, we will greet them or flame them. We will notice them. Even if we just post a sheep smilie.
Every new person is worth their weight in gold to the future of detnet!
In the long run, you won't regret the minimal time and effort this entails!
The community as a single organism was considered for this topic post.
I'm tired of asking from detters!
This time I'm telling it like it is going to be.
Once upon a time, you were the new person.
If you all weren't worth the effort, if you all weren't actually liked and appreciated, this would not have been written.
You don't have to reply to this topic; just read and consider.
I've made up the mind on this.
If the new person gets a moment on stage, why, you can too.

Y'know, I don't think I've ever made an introductory post on a message board. I hang around for a period of time, becoming familiar with the current topic trends and the attitudes of active users. After a while, if the place holds my interest, I'll register and slip a few comments in under the radar. No fuss, no muss, no newbie flame.

Yeah, well you missed your chance with me ya clown!! 
See if I EVER recommend someone to your forums again!! I felt so... rejected and dejected, the prozac bills alone have been horrendous! Time to go listen to some more Limp Bizkit and Korn, the only people who know my pain!

Dont take this the wrong way but why the fuck should we make a point of welcoming every single new person who posts to this forum? In order for me to have done that, I would have escalated to over 1000 posts in the first year of detnet, just in welcoming people.
This isn't, as Nikita put it so well, a day care center. Anyone who wants to is free to welcome a new poster, but that don't mean that we should be required to welcome everyone who comes here, or devote a thread to every newcomer.
Editor, I know you've got this new site, and you're excited about it, and are excited to be a part of the community that came with it, but that in no way entitles you to require us to do anything, even something as simple as greeting a newcomer. We'll do that on our own, as each member sees fit: if you want to greet every new comer that's great. If I want to greet them now and then, that's perfectly fine as well. I usually wait for someone to make a few posts to see what they are made of before I decide to welcome or flame, and I've rarely done either: when someone has posted enough thoughtful or non-incendiary posts, I respect them and will usually show that in how I refer to them or reply to their posts. And people like Catknight I respect for their sheer ability to post worthless stuff and still be somewhat liked in the forums. 
My point is simple: We greet newcomers in our own way, and trying to make a rule about it is not going to help. By all means you should greet every new comer if you want to, but don't expect me to jump on every new "Hi!!! I'm new to detnet!" post with either cheers or jeers. I save those till I decide to give them out.
If anyone feels offended that I didn't welcome them, they can bug me on AIM or ICQ, both means of contacting me are readily available from my profile, and if you want me to acknowledge your existance, if only by blocking you, thats the way to do it. 'nuff said.

actually I can't enforce much of anything other than by nagging and setting a good example! There have been new people, Delpino, who I've not said anything to since I figured they had been around before me...
This guy had introduced himself twice, sent emails, and got no response at all, and he wasn't a wanker, at least not to me. That made me mad. He is old school detnet! He wants to contribute!

I wasn't greeted when I joined, but I like the place so I stay. If I didn't like it here I wouldn't stay, it makes no difference how I was talked to when I joined.
I have to agree with Vigilante, I just loitered for a bit then came in when I knew what everyone was like.
