Well, most of you know a great deal about computers, so I figured this would be the best spot to ask for some advice.

I'm thinking about this:
800mhz P-III, Apollo Pro chipset 133mhz bus
256mb 133mhz sdram 2-DIMMs
45gb ide hard drive @ 7200rpm
3dfx voodoo5 5500
kenwood 72x cd-rom and a burner to go with
sb live platinum
w/ a viewsonic monitor, modem, other peripherals, and speakers = 񘠄

What do you guys/gals think? A rip-off? A decent price? I mainly want this cpu for doing multimedia stuff (producing and programming music and editing video) as well as games, of course. Oh, and it would be nice if it lasted about 3 years before becoming completely obsolete.

Uh, I haven't decided on a burner yet. Perhaps an HP? I don't know. Got any recommendations?

As for the monitor, it'll most likely be a flat screen ViewSonic 17".

Then I'm just getting an affordable Altec Lansing 3-piece (I primarily use headphones)

well for monitors, always go sony. for the burner, you should shell out the extra cash for the fastest available, so as to have most compatability later on...and nigel is right, you should go geforce 2...and you might want to think about a DVD player, if youre doing multimedia, dvd is a great source for shit....

Video editing? May I suggest SCSI disks or at least IDE RAID 0. If you go SCSI (highly recommended), then get a Teac or Plextor CD-R. I don't know much about IDE CD-R's except that they seem to burn a lot of coasters above 6x, and with kits including an Adaptec SCSI card falling in price, it's hard to go wrong.

For real video editing, you're not going to want to use any popular gamer's 3D card. Of course, my definition of "real" video editing happens to be working with MiniDV.

If yours is turning Grandma's 80th birthday Hi8 tapes into 320x240 MPEGs for sending out over AOL, then by all means grab a 3D accelerator with vidcap thrown on

I would go with a Thunderbird instead of Pnetium, that will save you a bunch, and you won't be losing any performance. Also, I would only choose the V5 if you really want the full screen AA, if not then go with a GeForce 2 GTS or Ultra 2.

I'm not doubting you, I'm just curious what you think about that.

Anyhow, I think the Plextor duo sounds pretty nice. I think I'll take that over a DVD-rom. I had just heard so many people recommending the Kenwood 72x (and it's pretty cheap).
