I"m sick. I've got the common runny/stuffed up nose deal going on. Where one minute it's running like crazy and then the next your down to one working nostril. ARG. I've had a pretty bad day todat and this doen't help. Being sick blows.

Theroy: A runny nose is a symptom of a cold because your body fights against the germ by covering them in mucus (or something). So instead of plowing all that out and ruining your bodies hard work to kick some germ ass... why don't you just breath through your mouth for a while?

Even when you are perfectly healthy, you only really use one nostril at a time, and it switches every 20 minutes or so. It's odd, especially when you catch it switching. Just sit there for a while...

that's it...

sit there...

it'll start switching... it's like a cross-fader. 10\%, 20\%, 40\%, 75\%, 100\% breathing from the right nostril now.

against stuffed nose: inhaling.
boiling water with NaCl (also known as common salt ), it really helps. You just sniff that hot steam for 5-10 minutes and you should be feeling better. Then drink a big cup of tea or hot milk, that also helps chasing the big bad cold.

DKB does make an interesting point, though. Notice how when you sneeze all the outgoing air is coming from your mouth? Your nose is cleared through Bernoulli's Principle. Basically whatever was in your nose that made you sneeze gets sucked further in your nose, down toward your throat, then out your mouth.
