It recently occurred to me that I have a terrible concentration span. I mean, one doesn't reserve all day and night on working on an urgent project and then only get two hours of actual work done in that allotted time. Generally I only tend to spend two minutes working at time before I think of something I'd rather be doing.

This is a particular problem right now, as I've an amount of work for friday that can only be described as "robustly impressive". I probably do have enough time to do it all - but only if my time eccifiency increases to something like 80\%.

So I ask : what do you do to aid concentration?

.....I have this problem, except I didn't realize that I had a paper due 7th period tommrow, until about 2 hours ago, and look at me, I'm still sitting on here chatting. I can't sit down and do school projects.

On the other hand if you give me something that I can see the point I'll work non-stop on a binge. I really don't mind concetrated work. But when I don't like the reasons behind the work, then I just sit around making exscuses not to do it.

...Like reading DetNet.

Haha. I don't get to abuse my totally lack of a work ethic for another three weeks.
Enjoy!

And wow! Hey! What's this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like . . . ow . . . ound . . . round . . . ground! That's it! That's a good name - ground!
I wonder if it will be friends with me?

And the rest, after a sudden wet thud, was silence.

My only advice is to get away from your study area, as it obviously isn't conducive. I had the same problem during college. When I rented a laptop for the last quarter of my last year, I got so much work done simply because I'd leave my room. I'd go to the student center, sit at a table, and just blast through my work. If I tried the same thing in my room, results were horribly worse. I'd spend entire nights doing homework, and have nothing to show for it.

I was actually going to suggest that as a possibility. On top of getting out of your room, talk to your doctor about it. They have a checklist of symptoms. And if it is serious enough to warrant medication, yes, one of the drugs used is a combination of amphetamines.

I was thinking more of the 'commercial-grade' variety, but yeah...

Meh. I'm fundamentally opposed to taking pills. I mean, not so much antibiotics and such when I'm sick, but rather shit like Ritalin, Prozac, Claritin, etc.

I've never tried it, but there are herbal remedies that I hear are quite nice. This site has some interesting stuff. Check #20 -- Concentration.

quote:
Made from Shankapushpi (Evolvulus Alsinoides leaf) plus 24 rejuvenative, stimulant, nervine, antispasmodic and alterative herbs in a base of Honey and Herbal ghee.

SHANKAPUSHPI RASAYANA: Has been traditionally designed to:
• counteract ADD
• aid in meditation
• promote alertness
• enhance concentration
• open awareness
• improve intelligence
• expand memory
• stimulate the thinking process
• balance the emotions
• reduce mental exhaustion
• improve artistic and creative abilities
• enhance the power of imagination

Improve intelligence? Um...

quote:
BOTANICAL INGREDIENTS: Herbal extracts of: Shankapushpi Evolvulus Alsinoides leaf Gotu Kola Hydrocotyle asiatica leaf Ginkgo Ginkgo biloba leaf Ashwagandha Withania somnifera root (Ma Huang Ephedra sinica stem 10\%) Kola Nut Cola acuminata seed Damiana Turnera aphrodisiaca leaf Sage Salvia officinalis leaf Skullcap Scutellaria spp. herb Ajwan Apium graveolens seed Licorice Glychyrrhiza glabra root Cinnamon Cinnamomum zeylanicum bark Mugwort Artemisia vulgaris herb Tulasi Ocinum Sanctum leaf Also avialable in essential oil Herbal Powders of: Green Tea leaf, Pippali Piper longum fruit Ginger Zingiber officinale root Nutmeg Myristica fragrans seed Cardamom Elettaria cardamomum seed Hibiscus Hibiscus rosa-sinensis flower Fennel Foeniculum vulgaris seed Pepper Piper nigrum fruit Cumin Cuminum cyminum seed Coriander Coriandrum sativum seed

I tried Ginkgo once (very briefly) and saw no effects whatsoever. But I hear this stuff, which is mostly Shankapushpi, though it contains Kola Nut and Gingko, works better.

I have a feeling this stuff may give a little buzz, but anything that is going to stimulate alertness and concentration will do the same...herbal speed, I guess.

I'm thinking about trying it. Maybe we can all buy some and post the results, like some wacky online scientific trial or something. That way, when we all die from some strange and bizarre poisoning, it will be okay, because we'll all be dead. With any luck, people will think it was some mass online suicide.
