Can anyone help me with my cd-rom drive? For some reason it does not show up on my computer anymore, when i goto my computer it is not there and when i try to use it, the message displayed says "no cd-rom attached to computer". The drive its self looks and seems to work fine opening and closing, and it also looks like it is reading the cd but nothing happens. Is there a driver i need to download? or is it not connected to the computer correctly? Anyway if someone could help me i would be very grateful. My computer is:

HP Brio (their website did nothing for me...)
500mhz celeron
192 ram
voodoo 3 16mb
10xcd-rom i think is made by hp but there is no label or anything.

So if anyone could tell me where i could get a driver that works all or most 10xcd-roms or a way to try to fix it that would be great. I have tried most things in windows (add new hardware in manual and auto, ext.)

Thanks

First you wave your magic wand and say, "A la peanut butter sandwiches!"

edit: Why? because he's Mumf0rd! A cookie to those who are old enough to remember.

Then you check your bios to see if your computer is even seeing the drive. Which OS are you running? Win98 and above don't need specific drivers for CD-ROM drives.

slackers win again.

Seriously though, if it's not recognized in the BIOS, better check your cables and make sure you've got power to it.

1. check jumper settings.
2. try new cable.
3. check device manager (windows)
4. throw pice o' shat in the trash, and buy a new one.

mumf0rd...those were the days....

Anycrap, sounds like you have power b/c it opens and closes. The most obvious problem is the IDE cable loose on the back of the drive, if you've checked that (at least twice), then we have to move to something else.

What did you upgrade? Did you add a new drive? If so, like CNCJake said, you may need to adjust the jumpers (MA/SL/CS) on the back of your drives. Are you familiar with this?

check your jumpers.

I had the same exact problem right before i upgraded to XP.

I had added my cd as primary slave, took out the jumper, forgot about it, went fucking nuts trying to figure out what I did, looked in my ase, saw the jumper still on the CD drive, put it in an BAM, it worked.

in my 6 years of computer repair, 99\% of the time your problem was caused by one of two things :

- The IDE cable is loose to the drive, or jumper settings aren't correct.

- The drive is dead. CD-ROM drives are notorious for just giving up one day, never to return...
