Dean Kamen, the DEKA inventor, is going to announce what "IT" (nicknamed "Ginger") is on Monday morning, on Good Morning America. Definitely something I'll be watching. No one knows exaclty what it is, but all the top tech investors who have been in on it say it's some sort of great, society-changing invention. May want to check it out.
http://www.ginger-chat.com/

It must be pretty badass, because the Manager of Credit Suisse First Boston (a big bank) is one of the people who knows what it is, and he claims Kamen will be worth 5x what Gates is in 5 years.

Any guesses on this thing? the ginger-chat site has some good info...boggles my mind, though.

another thing:

14. There is a spin-off of Deka Research and Development, called Acros, LLC which according to the trademark will produce "motorized, self-propelled, wheeled personal mobility aids, namely wheelchairs, scooters, carts, and chariots."

15. (Acros, LLC) has bought up the url's www.flywheels.com, www.flywheels.org, flywheelsucks.com, myflywheel.com, [flywheeling.com - ( Thanks majic )] (From now on new domains will be listed in the Domain Timeline section below).

hoverscooters! can you say back to the future?

I recall hearing something about a wheelchair that could climb stairs and whatnot

The wheelchair is actually something he already invented. They did a big writeup on it for wired. It's a sort of 6-wheeled ATV wheelchair that can truck at 30MPH and stand on two legs. It has really advanced blancing systems.

anyways...my guess is close to catknight -- it's not an engine though, he said a while back that the device itself was used for transportation. It's sort of obvious that it's going to be called a flywheel. bearing that in mind, what can it be? "fly" "wheel"...something essential to transportation, and flying. Interesting.

Welcome back syf...

I'm curious what IT is.

I'm reminded of a song... though the name of the band and the song name escapes me... But it is about "IT"... help?

The fuck Cat?? I'll get this right so that people understand. The flywheel, on any engine, is a huge piece of metal (or something) that only allows for gains in speed. In other words it's like a rachet, it only allows force in one direction, but not in the other. So it can only speed up. This way it preserves the momentum in a engine that has bursts of power (such as a steam engine) or if the power ratio's change it's used to protect the engine and the transmission from damage. The latter is what flywheels are used for in your standard car. The clutch is between the engine and the flywheel and the Flywheel is on the transmission side (including gear box and all.) When you push in the clutch pedal it makes the actual clutch plates seperate, causing the flywheel and the engine to spin seperately, then when you switch gears the flywheel absorbs the difference in power (in a downshift a higher RPM on the flywheel is transfered into power on the transmission, in an upshift power is transfered into a higher RPM on the transmission) and then when you "Engage" the clutch the engine is at a lowwer RPM (Because you let the gas out) and the flywheel is at the higher or lowwer RPM (because of the shift, but SHOULD still be higher then the engines RPM.) Then when you push in the gas, and give power to the engine it receives no resistance until it gets to above the flywheel's RPM. This way no damage to the engine is sustained from shifting (say running at a high RPM and downshifting where the same RPM require more power).

I'm sorry if noone got that, but I sorta got a buzz, and that's the only way I could desribe it.

Footnote: So in CatKnight's case they took a (apparently) large flywheel, spun it up to a high RPM, and then powered the wheels off the inertia (probably at a really high gear ratio.)

The difference between CatKnight's post and Anztac's post is the difference between physics and engineering.

That was brilliantly stated.

Catknight is right, though. A flywheel is just a method of energy storage by storing it in a motion about a moment. Out of curiosity, is that kinetic energy or potential energy stored in a flywheel? I know it's moving, but it isn't doing any work until it's applied, so I'd call it potential... or both.
