Ok, I opened up an ftp site so people didn't have to post their underwear pictures and CK flame art on Geocities. I gave out a password in another thread along with a message asking not to abuse my poor webserver ...a simple enough request. But some dumbass has gotta always try and push it. Multiple login attempts were made on my other servers using the password provided in this forum as well as this attempt at pushing a passwd file to my Win2K box!?

I don't really care, the security on my boxes is not terribly lame and the drive I allow people to upload to is limited to 30MB, so there is no chance of it becoming a w4r3z site or anything. It's just that I figure anybody browsing these forums is a little more respectful then that. I guess there are people who will just never get it.
Are any of you overwelmed by the stupidity of script kiddies?

/me just realized this should go into the rants section ..but I do want to hear other stories of net stupidity, so it's not purely a rant.

It looks like a dial-up account based in Germany. The IP 217.229.199.154 resolves to <pD9E5C79A.dip.t-dialin.net>. This is someone on a dialup using the german ISP Deutche Telekom Online Service GmbH.

I don't know whether the IP is dynamically allocated but the host wasn't online (or was blocking ICMP) at the time I had a nosey.

1. I use DSL, not dial-up
2. I didn't go anywhere near Wiley's site, because I have no idea what to do to put up a pic there (btw, WHAT EXACTLY is a ftp site???)
3. I wouldn't screw up people's stuff, especially not when I know that these people could probably make my computer die.

If someone tells me how to find out what my IP is, I'd willingly post it here.

Could it be someone's been cheating, i.e. changing his/her IP to that German one???

Regarding #2, we need to get her some instructions so we can see the undie pic!

An ftp (file transfer protocl) site is a computer that someone has set up as an ftp server, allowing people to connect and ul/dl files. They're not terribly secure (scp for linux is better), but they're quite handy.

As for the other, you can find out what your ip is by going to Start, Run and typing winipcfg and selecting your network card (not the PPP Adapter) from the dropdown on Win 9x. On NT/2K, go to a command prompt (start, run, type cmd and hit enter). At the prompt type ipconfig. For linux, type netconf and select the Basic Host Information option.

Does that help?

Either way, DO NOT post your IP here. It opens you up for all sorts of potential mayhem. I, for one, completly believe that it wasn't you.

P.S. I'm sucking up b/c I want to see the your pic in the undies thread!

I don't think it was you, don't worry. And don't post your IP anywhere! As evident by my earlier post even people in these forums can be dumbasses sometimes. I'm sure it was just somebody browsing along ...hopefuly not the lingering type. I kinda expected it when I posted the address here, but it is still fustrating to see.
Go to http://cbk.net/ftp.htm for a screenshot showing how to ftp in DOS (it's not much, but it may help) and links to some good FTP software. (and get the undie pics up!)
