Science Fiction, w00t!

Far§cape in particular, i am a big fan. If you are not familiar you can find it on the Sci fi channel or their site (to lazy to link it, actually i am weeding out the lazy ppl who won't type in the obvious URL [once inside parenthesis do i have to use bracets?{oops off the subject (I have been up many hours so forgive me, now to close)}]) now that i am back on track SCI-FI ROCKS! the far§cape episode i just watched had this excellently done time travle theme (cause and effect and cause) it was really well done.

I love all Sci-fi. It is the essence of creativity. A writer can start with the most basic idea and evolve it into the most complex web using the "tools" of sci fi. They can create entire worlds, technologies, species, and it all works.... I guess fantasy can do this to, but it is much more limited.

Dan Simmons' "Hyperion" saga is a great journey into the heart of science fiction.

Outter Limits!!! need i say more?

No. As long as you close all the brackets you open, you're alright.

SciFi and Farscape in particular are King. I now have the entire first season and part of the second season DVD rips on CD and they rock! Can't wait for the full series to come out on DVD here in the states like it has in region 2 (which I think sux because region encoding is nothing but an unnecessary gag to line some fat assed people's pockets). I think three or four DVD's have come out here in the states but they're not at my local suncoast yet.

Another series that's king is Stargate SG1, but that's on Fox.

<devil's advocate>
Sci Fi is dumb. It's just a cop out. You say it lets you create whole races and planets and technologies... well, all that stuff is just a cover for not being able to write. Of all the movies and books that come out in a year, not dealing with scifi, how many are really any good? Many suck. How many scifi movies sucked last year? Just one... battlefield earth... because even using the free money tools of scifi, nothing could save that flaming wreck.

Basically, it's like special effects. Jurassic Park was a decent story built around a scifi pillar. But it wouldn't have made nearly as much without those gratuitous special effects... many of which were unnecessary.

The Professional was an awesome movie because of good writing, good acting, and amazing direction. They didn't need to use any of those copout scifi tricks like thinking up a new species for a 2 hour movie. No, just Italians having fun with guns. They used some violence as an enhancement to the story, not to replace it... like worlds and species and technologies often do.

Take your scifi, love your new worlds. I'll take my good stories and good ol fashion gumption.
