I was just thinking in the shower this morning (thats where i get all my bright thoughts)...
Remember the whole big fuss about how m$ was integrating ie with winbloze, and how that was killing the competition for other browsers? well, winXP comes with integrated cd burning from the explorer shell (rightclick, send to CD drive), image previewer, movie maker, firewall, outlook express... i wonder if nero or adaptec kicked up a fuss about that cd-burning thing? or if any of the firewall dudes had anything to say about the built-in firewall.

however, i don't really think that its such a bad thing. if i was a total n00b who just bought a computer with a cd writer, i'd expect that i could copy stuff to it just by dragging and dropping like any other drive. i think that this time, they've actually built a proper operating system. i mean, if i bought a cheapo cd-writer which didn't come with any s/w, why should i have to go and download or pay for software in order to use it?

they should also get credit for catering for the gay community with their new interface

/me thinks he should shut up now

On the one hand you have the extreme that everything should be integrated into the operating system - This would indeed be very neat, as all of the software components could be very tightly integrated with each other. This would, however, mean that next to no competition will find a role.

On the other extreme, there's that the system should be a collection of small components from different companies, thus there is a lot of opportunity for competition, and independent innovation, but the payoff is that the components arn't integrated quite so seamlessly.

We need to define what is an acceptable amount of stuff to integrate. I can see a case for integrating stuff like firewalls and zip decompression, but no-one wants a humongous "Microsoft software 2005" style package that does everything.

Small companies like nico mak (winzip) etc would have little chance against microsoft whether or not you see microsofts actions as an abuse of it's dominance per se. Microsoft has to be stopped somewhere.

Most of the bundled software isn't the best on the market, so that's a big insentive to get new stuff. Also, digital editting works well w/ the software that comes w/ your camera, so that stuff isn't all that usefull. The way I see it, if your company wants that buisness, quit bitching and write better software. People -will- buy it if it's good stuff.

Not if its not as easy to use...
Not if they can download it illegally for free...

Just another POV...

I still think the majority of software is bought and not pirated. There are no real numbers to back this up either way unbiased, I believe...

And 'good' software in this market is generally easy to use (ie. Windows).

i find win xp's cd burning capabilities slightly subpar but easier to use, especially for music cds.

just click a bunch of files, and click "burn to audio cd" and media player pops up. it's slow as hell because of the converting though. it lacks capbilities of lowering burn speed though.

the data cds it makes can only be read on xp, in a lot of cases, from what i've heard.

XP-integrated audio-CD burning = good.
XP-integrated data-CD burning fucking up all other burning programs until you ForceASPI and install them and patch them etc etc etc ... = BAD.

Nuff said.

I betcha most of these new "integrated features" are actually licensed from companies like Roxio...

Company: Hey MS, your integrated foobar is going to wreck our market!

MS: (hands company a briefcase full of unmarked bills)

Company: My bad.

MS is not stupid, and they are no stranger to "absorbing" 3rd-party products. (e.g. MS Project came from Visio, Frontpage came almost whole from another company, even IE was based off the ancient Mosaic codebase).

And I have a feeling TaxMax is right too - some of the integrated things are probably crippled or have features disabled, to create a market for "upgrades." (cf. crippled Photoshop versions that come with scanners...)
